About Dollar General
Dollar General, located at 2517 Co Rd 36, Akron, AL 35441, United States, stands as a prominent dollar store and discount retailer committed to providing customers with a wide array of household goods, groceries, beauty products, and more at affordable prices. Established originally as a wholesale business in 1939 by J.L. Turner and his son Cal Turner, Sr., the company transitioned into retail with the opening of its first Dollar General store in Springfield, Kentucky, in 1955. The founding principle was straightforward yet powerful: no item in the store would cost more than one dollar, making essential goods accessible to a broad customer base[1][4][5].
Over the decades, Dollar General has evolved into a multifaceted retail chain that not only serves as a dollar store but also functions as a convenience store, discount store, drug store, grocery store, and produce market. The store’s product mix includes trusted national brands such as Clorox, Energizer, Procter & Gamble, Coca-Cola, and Kellogg’s, alongside high-quality private label brands that provide customers with additional value and choice[3].
The company’s mission, “Serving Others,” reflects its dedication to placing customers at the center of its operations. Dollar General strives to make shopping hassle-free and affordable, operating more than 20,000 stores across 48 states. This extensive footprint ensures that even rural and underserved communities have access to essential goods at everyday low prices. The company’s commitment extends beyond customers to its employees and communities, offering career growth opportunities and supporting local initiatives in literacy and education[3].
Dollar General’s business model emphasizes simplicity, convenience, and value. Its stores are designed to be easy to shop, with a focus on providing essential items at prices that fit modest budgets. This approach has made Dollar General the largest small-box retailer in the United States and a leading discount retailer, with approximately 25% of its merchandise still priced at one dollar or less. The company’s robust supply chain and distribution network ensure that stores remain well-stocked, supporting consistent availability of products that customers rely on daily[4][5].

Been closing at noon for over six weeks now, still opens at 8am. Their excuse is the AC is down but it's been more than enough time to resolve that issue. If they refuse to invest in their store, so do I. I implore you to just go to the DG market in Moundville, it's so much better, And they actually restock regularly.

There's a couple employees who have an attitude problem. They don't greet customers in any way. One employee hit my vehicle with a buggy and wouldn't even apologize for it. All I got was "oh". Felicia is one of these rude employees and the one who hit my vehicle.

I quickly stopped in for a few items. It was not busy, so I was checked out as soon as I walked to the counter. Face masks are encouraged and required, even though a person every now and then will come in without it.
